2025 NFL DRAFT BIBLE – OFFENSIVE TACKLES
The offensive tackle class of 2025 has been bandied about with much banter amongst draft pundits alike. It really comes down to what’s your flavor, as there is more assortment than a Baskin Robbins.
Other than quarterback, the offensive tackle positions are the most critical spots to building a successful roster and they are compensated accordingly. That is why with up to a half dozen offensive tackles projected to be selected on the first day of the draft, this class has a real opportunity to leave a defining impact on the league.
Our top offensive tackle prospect is Kelvin Banks out of Texas. He hasn’t moved from the top spot on our big board since the start of the season. That is due to refined mechanics, adequate length, big game experience and unparalleled consistency that all translates to the NFL. In fact, Banks has not missed a start at left tackle since his sophomore year of high school! Don’t anticipate that changing on Sundays.
Many prefer the talents of Will Campbell (photo: LSU Athletics) out of LSU. A blindside protector for both Garrett Nussmeier and Jayden Daniels during his time in Baton Rouge, Campbell has come under intense scrutiny due to his arm length (lack thereof). The Baton Rouge battering ram has pushed back against his naysayers, stating that his short arms are, ‘BS.’ The extreme inconsistencies in arm length measurements between the all-star games, combine and pro days didn’t lend to any clarity either, adding a layer of intrigue this April.
Only time will tell the impact of the much debated arm length conspiracies. However, longtime observers of the game are quick to point out the struggles in which Joe Thuney incurred during the Super Bowl, when he was asked to kick outside to tackle from his natural guard spot. After an Eagles sack party celebration that is still ongoing, Thuney was jettisoned out of Kansas City and sent to Chicago, in exchange for a fourth round pick.
Believe or not, there was more suspicious activity that occurred in Indianapolis. The sudden ascension of Armand Membou will be a fascinating case study that draft historians will dissect for years to come. That is because no one had Membou pegged as the top consensus tackle prospect prior to his stunning display of athletic prowess at the NFL Scouting Combine. Many personnel types will claim that the combine doesn’t dictate draft grades. Hogwash! Membou is the prime example of how prospects can use the Indianapolis showcase to catapult up draft boards, as he has now emerged as the ‘odds-on’ favorite to be the first offensive lineman chosen.
So we have three vastly different distinct types of offensive tackle vying to stake claim as the top tackle in the class. There is the fundamentally sound technician in Banks, who would seem to be the safest pick. Then, there is the nasty tenacious mauler of Campbell, who likely offers the most upside. Plus, the total finesse style of Membou who brings rare agility but lacks killer instinct.
We will be forced to wait until April 24th in Green Bay to see how all the drama unfolds.
