HEISMAN FRONT-RUNNER SUFFERS HAND INJURY
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, a top contender for the Heisman Trophy race, underwent hand surgery for a broken bone in his right throwing hand, which he suffered during the Sooners win over Auburn. On the season, Mateer had accounted for 351.3 yards of total offense per game, while accounting for 11 touchdowns. No official word yet on how much time he will miss but head coach Brent Venables announced that sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. would start for the unbeaten Sooners (4-0) this week against Kent State (1-3).
MORE NFL ROSTERS, BY THE NUMBERS
Last week, we highlighted NFL demographics, which featured player origins by state, city and high school. The league has since provided more data of where players hail from based on Week 1 opening kick off rosters. The results provide key insight as to where the current player pool originates from and how organizations construct their rosters. For the ninth consecutive season, Alabama had the most or tied for the most players (60) on active NFL Kickoff Weekend rosters. Ohio State (56 players) ranked second in 2025, followed by Georgia (55). Need a quarterback? Best to grab one early on. Amongst the 32 Week 1 starters in the NFL, 26-of-the-32 quarterbacks hail from the first round, including nine of which were selected with the No.1 overall pick in the draft–just four signal-callers were chosen in the third round or later. Where’s the beef? Good chance you will find it up north, as the New England Patriots boast a whopping 14 players who weigh 300-plus pounds! In terms of overall experience, that distinction would belong to the Washington Commanders, whose players average 6.07 years of NFL experience, including a league-high 17 players over the age of 30. How about the youngest team in the NFL? That honor would go to the Green Bay Packers, whose average roster age is 25.28 years old. However, the Minnesota Vikings lead all teams with rookie and first year players (15). All info is courtesy of the NFL Communications department. (This story originally appeared on Inside The League)

CFL RULE CHANGES: TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION
There has been a wide array of opinions on the new CFL rule changes that were announced this week. Starting in 2026, the rouge will no longer include a single point for a missed field goal attempt that goes wide of the goalposts. A point will also not be awarded when a punt or kickoff sails through or rolls out the back, or sides, of an end zone without being touched by a returner. Other new changes includes team benches being on opposite sides of the field and a new 35-second play clock. Beginning in 2027, the CFL will move goal posts to the back of the end zone and shorten the field to 100 yards, with 15-yard end zones. The league projects this will add about 60 additional touchdowns per season. The CFL field will remain 65 yards wide. New commissioner Stewart Johnston made the announcement after gathering feedback during his first 150 days on the job. Some have lauded the changes, while other have denounced the decision to alter the longest current professional football league in the world.
IN MEMORIAM: BOBBY GRIER (1942 - 2025) & MORE
Long time New England Patriots coach and scout Bobby Grier passed away over the weekend at age 82. Largely responsible for the Patriots selection of Tom Brady, the legendary executive began with New England in 1981 and worked with the team until 2000. He also worked in the Houston Texans front office from 2000 through 2016, before spending the final eight years of his career with the Miami Dolphins, serving as a consultant to Dolphins GM and his son, Chris Grier. The football community mourns his loss. Also over the weekend, UCF announced the passing of offensive line coach Shawn Clark at 50 years old. On Tuesday, we received word that former Cincinnati Bengals running back Rudi Johnson has died at age 45. TMZ reports that Johnson had been struggling with CTE. One other passing of note was longtime Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer Dale Lolley who passed away at the age of 56 and had covered the team for over 30 years. May they rest in peace.
