CFL NOTEBOOK: EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
We are one-third of the way through the CFL season and thus far, we have learned to expect the unexpected.
The defending champion Toronto Argonauts occupy the basement in the East Division at 1-5 but still within striking distance of the playoffs. The intent is to have starting quarterback Chad Kelly make his season debut this week against Winnipeg. With 14 weeks remaining in regular season play, there is plenty of time for Toronto to makeup ground but they better get a move on it. The Argos lost a barnburner to the Montreal Alouettes this past week, as Davis Alexander demonstrated once again why he is a budding CFL superstar. Unfortunately, Alexander suffered an injury during the win and was placed on the six-game IR this week.
Meanwhile, the Calgary Stampeders have re-loaded in a major way and are suddenly one of the Grey Cup favorites after finishing with league-worst five wins a year ago. The Stampeders poured it on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the second half behind Vernon Adams Jr. three touchdown passes, winning easily 41-20. The only other team north of the border able to keep up with Calgary would be the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who held off the BC Lions in a 33-27 shootout. Saskatchewan signal-caller Tre Harris threw for 395 yards and three touchdowns (one interception), while BC quarterback Nathan Rourke also tossed a trio of touchdowns (one interception) and had 337 yards.
In Edmonton, the Elks come out of the bye week with a quarterback controversy, as incumbent Tre Ford has been splitting first team reps with two-time Grey Cup champion Cody Fajardo. The Edmonton front office was under extreme pressure to start the Canadien fan-favorite Ford but are now realizing that caving to outside noise comes with severe repercussions. They face a tall task as they visit Saskatchewan in Week 8.
Be sure to tune-in to CFL+ to watch every game for free. This week, CFL action begins Thursday with the Game of the Week, as Montreal visits Calgary. There will be a CFL game each night this weekend, so buckle up and enjoy the festivities.
