AROUND THE ALT FOOTBALL UNIVERSE
For those who work in football, we preach ‘Faith, Family, Football’ as the three key principles of our daily life. It’s time for us to place an extra emphasis on faith and family this time of year, as the football calendar is an enjoyable but brutal grind for any individual worth their weight in this business. Please be safe, smart and have fun out there!
STEELERS ALL-IN OFFSEASON
No franchise was busier in June than the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are ‘All In’ for their pursuit of a seventh Vince Lombardi Trophy. The start of the month saw the signing of quarterback Aaron Rodgers become official. It ended with the Steelers acquisition of Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith from the Miami Dolphins during the final day of the month. Earlier this offseason, Pittsburgh signed wideout D.K. Metcalf and cornerback Darius Slay, who brings championship pedigree from the in-state rival Philadelphia Eagles. The moves by GM Omar Kahn to bring in these veterans are designed to equip the Steelers with a roster capable of competing with the AFC supreme teams, as they have their eyes set on a deep run into February. Now it’s up to head coach Mike Tomlin to deliver.
CFL CREAM RISES TO THE TOP
One month into the CFL season, it has become evident who the early contenders are, as the Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-0) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3-0) remain the only two unbeaten teams, while the Montreal Madmen (3-1) will be a force to be reckoned with. Meanwhile, the Calgary Stampeders (2-1), who are set to host the Blue Bombers this week, are the only other franchise with a winning record.
NFL ANNOUNCES NO SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFT
The NFL informed teams that there will be no Supplemental Draft for the sixth consecutive year in 2025. The Supplemental Draft is an option for draft-eligible players who did not declare for the regular NFL Draft for various reasons. In most cases, that’s due to a player having unexpected eligibility issues in college (academic or otherwise). In total, 46 players have been selected in the Supplemental Draft, most notably Cris Carter of the Vikings in 1987.
ALBANY FENDS OFF NASHVILLE FOR ARENA CROWN
The Albany Firebirds defeated the Nashville Kats, 60-57, winning The Arena Crown, as Albany quarterback Sam Castronova finished with seven total touchdowns and 251 total yards. Castronova was given the Real American Beer MVP Award of the Championship, out-dueling Tyler Kulka of the Kats, who threw for 347 yards and eight touchdowns.
VIENNA VIKINGS RIDING WIN STREAK IN ELF
The Vienna Vikings improved their record to 5-1 after a 44-38 victory over the Raiders Tirol and are currently riding a four-game winning streak. Vikings quarterback Ben Holmes had a standout game with five touchdowns, as they prepare to face the Prague Lions (4-2) in Week 8.
