Tune-in below to the second hour of power to learn why the Giants and Jets are a mess in the Meadowlands. Plus, a look at how the top of the 2025 NFL Draft landscape has evolved and the stark reality of how egos destroy NFL organizations.
MIDSEASON NFL SNAPSHOT OFFERS BIT OF CLARITY
Some Motor City mojo has placed the Detroit Lions atop the NFC as the most complete team as we near November. Sure, the San Francisco 49ers could get healthy, the Green Bay Packers are hot and the Philadelphia Eagles appear to be soaring but none would seem to be on the Lions level. In fact, the Packers host the Lions in a true barometer test matchup this week. One of the oldest organizations in the NFL (founded in 1930), Detroit has never been to the Super Bowl. This year just feels different.
In the AFC, the rich got richer this past week, as the still undefeated Kansas City Chiefs added wideout DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans and pass-rusher Josh Uche from the New England Patriots for the second half stretch run. Those moves were rivaled by the Buffalo Bills acquisition of receiver Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens addition of Diontae Johnson from the Carolina Panthers.
We are seeing the cream rise to the top in the NFL. Our midseason prediction for Super Bowl LVIII: Lions 31, Chiefs 27.
MARQUEE NCAA MATCHUPS MARRED BY INJURY
There are two mighty matchups on the college football docket filled with great anticipation. The first one features a high stakes B1G contest between two teams both nationally ranked in the top five when Ohio State visits Penn State. This matchup will have ultimate ramifications on the College Football Playoffs. However, Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin has stated that quarterback Drew Allar could be a game-time decision due to a knee injury he endured this past week in their win over Wisconsin. If he plays, a win over the Buckeyes would be deemed a signature moment and help boost his draft stock. Penn State has never been more primed to position themselves for a national championship under Franklin, who is a woeful 1-9 against the Buckeyes. Saturday will be the biggest challenge of his career.
A bit more under the radar is an ACC battle between unbeaten Pittsburgh who visits one-loss SMU, in what would be a major statement game for either victor. Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi, who earlier in the week stated that it would be a “wait-and-see” approach with Eli Holstein, who also suffered injury last weekend, now says the gunslinger has been cleared to play. One of the more impressive true freshmen we’ve seen in quite some time, Holstein is a candidate to be the No.1 quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft, remember the name. One player worth keeping an eye on for the 2025 NFL Draft is Panthers pint-sized runner Desmond Reid, who packs a big punch. His vision, change of direction ability and receiving prowess, makes him one of the most dangerous players in the nation.
AN EVENING OF REMEMBRANCE AT PENN
It came with great honor to attend the ceremony for the Bert Bell statue dedication in Philadelphia at Penn on October 25th. A true pioneer for this great game of football, Bell is known for guiding the Quakers to their lone Rose Bowl in 1917. He would later become the first owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, go on to become NFL commissioner (1946 - 1959) where he is credited with inventing the NFL Draft and coined the famous phrase, ‘On any given Sunday.” Thank you to Upton Bell, the entire Bell family and the University of Penn for hosting us!
"On any given Sunday, any team in the NFL can beat any other team." — Bert Bell
