NFL Draft All-UDFA Team & CFL Draft Preview
A look at some notable players who went undrafted in the NFL Draft, plus a preview of the CFL Draft.
UNDRAFTED FREE AGENT GEMS
The eighth round of the NFL Draft, also known as the undrafted free agent signing period that ensues immediately following the three-day event, is where front office personnel earn their oats.
Remarkably, there were 486 undrafted free agent players on NFL Week 1 rosters in 2024. On any given year, UDFA players consist of approximately 20% of each NFL roster. That number expands to 40%, once you include practice squad spots. Additionally, 12% of the NFL Week 1 starters were UDFA. For those curious, there have been 15 undrafted free agent players who have gone on to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
So who are those players from the Class of 2025? Let’s try to clue in on some of the suspects …
TOP-DOLLAR TICKET ITEMS
One way to perceive how teams value undrafted free agents is to examine their signing bonus and guaranteed portion of their salary. Some of the players who fit into the category are as follows:
Benjamin Chukwuma, OT, Georgia State - Signed by the Buccaneers for $300,000 ($245k guaranteed), plus $55K bonus.
Tim McKay, OG, North Carolina State - Signed by the Commanders for $275,000 (total guaranteed).
Valentin Senn, OT, UConn - Signed by the Cardinals for $274,000.
Josh Fryar, OG, Ohio State - Signed bythe Cardinals for $269,000.
You will notice the common denominator here being offensive linemen, which every NFL franchise is constantly seeking to add to the depth.
