“Keep the main thing, the main thing” – LB, Reuben Bain #3
The tempo at practice on Friday, August 7 was very upbeat in Tampa Bay, on a day that showed the offense, led by Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, can move the ball up-and-down the field with the best of them. However, the offense stalled out in the red zone too often, as they were unable to finish multiple drives during team drills. On a hot 90-degree degree day in Florida, the Bucs looks to be shaping up nicely just in time for their first preseason game at the New York Jets on August 14th.
Below are five takeaways from the practice session:
Buccaneers first round pick Reuben Bain is going to be tough to maintain on passing downs, as his elite bend was on full display, demonstrating his ability to consistently get to the quarterback during team drills. There were a few scripted plays which were designed to run right at him and he did get caught playing a bit too high on his pad level, though he was still able to hold the edge. The rookie pass-rusher is sure to have a few speed-bumps throughout the season but Bain would appear to have a long, successful career in front of him. He told All Access Football that his biggest adjustment coming from college into camp was just “playing with consistency and focusing on each individual rep, on its own.”
Tampa Bay fourth round pick Keionte Scott does not lose reps! A stalwart in the secondary playing most nickelback, there did not appear to be a single Buccaneers wideout who got the better of him throughout the entire practice. Early indications are Scott could emerge as a Day 3 gem and play a valuable backup role, capable of filling in at multiple spots.
