Alabama RB Jahmyr Gibbs #13 | Jr | 5090 | 199 | 4.36 | Dalton, GA | 03.20.02 (21.6)
One-Liner:Â
One of the most uniform prospects in collegiate football, Gibbs’ liabilities on the field are minimal thanks to a skillset rich with ability in all schemes.
Evaluation: When it comes to Gibbs, don’t blink or you’ll get hit with a rip, whoop, vroom, big-play explosion. He checks off the boxes when it comes to speed, quickness, acceleration, agility and balance. He is rarely taken down by the first defender due to his elite lower body strength and athletic prowess. Gibbs has flexibility analogous to Gumby, with buttery ankles and hips. His competitive demeanor is not to be questioned, fighting for yards in a scrap. More than a shifty guy with deceptive power and a ruthless stiff arm. He is also sophisticated in the passing game, running a plethora of routes, with soft hands and smooth stride out of the catch point. The primary concerns in his game are in pass protection and usage. He saw limited reps in pass pro at Georgia Tech, with obvious flaws when tasked and continued to be a work in progress at Tuscaloosa. One of the most uniform prospects in collegiate football, Gibbs’ liabilities on the field are minimal thanks to a skillset rich with ability in all schemes. He’s not just a wide zone runner with between-the-tackles capability, but is adept in both gap and zone schemes. Gibbs demonstrates comfortable vision, hits cutbacks with enthusiasm by way of exceptional acceleration and hits a second gear in the open field. He occupies athleticism scarcely seen and should be the second running back off the board in 2023.
Background: Invited to NFL Combine. Measured 9-inch hand, 30.5-inch arm, 74-inch wingspan. Ran 1.52 10-yard split. A four-star prospect from Dalton High School in Georgia where he was the 10th-ranked player in the state. Was honorable mention All-ACC in 2020. In 2021, he was named to the All-ACC team at three different positions (all-purpose, specialist, and running back). Tallied 1,805 all-purpose yards as a sophomore, which was the second most in a season in Georgia Tech history. His 44 receptions in 2022 was second all-time by a running back at Alabama. Earned second team All-SEC honors as running back and all-purpose player. Repped by Athletes First.
Ric’s 2022 Evaluation:
Fluid body with ample mass for the position. Occupies athleticism scarcely seen. Plus ability in quickness, balance, acceleration, agility, and speed. Seldom if ever taken down by the first defender. Plays chess with tacklers, leaving them guessing his skill move. Impossible to take down in the open field thanks to his athletic prowess and functional strength. Flexibility analogous to Gumby, with buttery ankles and hips. Competitive demeanor not to be questioned, fighting for yards in a scrap. More than a shifty guy, with deceptive power and a ruthless stiff arm. Elite lower body strength when taken pound for pound. Contact balance and feet are not to be trifled with. Not just a wide zone runner with between-the-tackles capability. Adept in both gap and zone schemes. Comfortable vision, hitting cutbacks with enthusiasm by way of exceptional acceleration. Can and will hit a second gear in the open field. Sophisticated in the passing game, running a plethora of routes. Soft hands with a smooth stride out of the catch point. Primary concerns are pass protection and usage. Limited reps in pass pro at Georgia Tech, with obvious flaws when tasked. Was the focal point of the offense his freshman and sophomore year, handling the ball second-most to only the quarterback. Gibbs is one of the more well-rounded players in college, with acumen and skillset affluent in terms of capability. If he can prove his durability and clean up his pass pro.Â
Strengths
Speed creates ability to widen field for play-callers.
Runs with instant acceleration and gliding strides.
Light, quick feet for sudden, lateral cuts.
Opens the corner by altering tempo and stride to stall pursuit.
Wiggle results in low success rate for open-field tacklers.
Mismatch weapon in the passing game.
Route running makes him a tough cover in man.
Hands are natural, soft and sure.
Above average potential as a kick returner.
Weaknesses
Flashes of indecisiveness processing inside runs.
Looks for cuts when the track lacks traffic.
Below average feel for blocking development.
Missing contact power to get tough yards.
Might lack the frame for consistent blitz pickup.
Jahmyr Gibbs Runs One of Fastest 40 Times at NFL Combine
The Alabama running back showcased his speed that will benefit an NFL team this fall.
The NFL Combine gives players with NFL aspirations an opportunity to impress both on and off the field in front of dozens of pro personnel, including scouts and coaches.Â
During his media session, former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs touted his versatility and speed as skills that make him one of the best running backs in this year's class. And he had the chance to prove it Sunday afternoon and showed why his speed will benefit one NFL team next fall.Â
Gibbs ran a blazing 4.36 seconds official 40-yard dash time. It was the second highest among running backs, only behind Texas A&M's Devon Achane, and tied for seventh fastest overall at the 2023 NFL Combine.Â
He is considered one of the top two running backs in this year's class alongside Texas' Bijan Robinson. The Texas back ran a 4.46 official on Sunday. Gibbs measured in at 5-9, 199 pounds with a 33.5 vertical.
In his lone season with the Crimson Tide, Gibbs ran for 926 yards and seven touchdowns along with 444 yards and three touchdowns receiving. The Georgia Tech transfer was Alabama's leading rusher and third-leading receiver.Â
Gibbs alongside his other Alabama teammates and NFL Draft hopefuls like Bryce Young, Will Anderson Jr., Henry To'oTo'o and more will also have the opportunity to perform at Alabama's two Pro Days on March 23 and April 6.Â
