COMBINE Q&A: SHEMAR STEWART, DL, TEXAS A&M
The podium exchange between Texas A&M defensive line prospect Shemar Stewart and the national media in Indianapolis shed light into what makes this potential NFL superstar tick. Some of the topics covered below include where he envisions himself at the next level, his Senior Bowl experience, relationship with Teddy Bridgewater, why he could be the next Julius Peppers and why he plans to ‘bring hell’ to a city near you on Sundays. Buckle up and enjoy!
What does it mean to represent South Florida?
Man, it's a blessing. I'm blessed to be in this position to represent where I come from. We come from the city. People see my weight and say, 'Oh, I'm probably fast.' But growing up in South Florida, gets the fastest competition you can find. I feel like it really prepped my body to become a fast player.
Has your lack of production come up with NFL teams?
I wasn't a sack-chasing warrior. I just wanted to become the best player for my team. And sometimes the stats don't show that. Definitely trying to get more comfortable and get after the quarterback, trying to run through the tackle instead of maybe trying to reach out, lunging for a tackle.
Is there any player that you look to model your game after?
Julius Peppers. I feel like my body and our athletic ability are pretty similar. I'm not going to say I'm up there with him, because he's definitely a Hall of Famer. But it's pretty similar in my eyes.
How did you get hooked on Julius Peppers?
I was scrolling through YouTube one day watching some of the NFL guys, and I seen him, and went, 'Man, he kind of looks like me.' Same weight and everything. He's explosive, strong and powerful. He just made plays. I think he got the most interceptions I've ever seen from a d-lineman. I was maybe around 17, 18 years old (when he saw Peppers on YouTube).
Have NFL teams discussed what weight they prefer yo to play at?
I finished my college career at 285 (pounds). I came in at 285. I'm just way more lean. They haven't told me anything. But I always tell teams, 'If you need me to be 250, I'll be 250 by tomorrow. I'll try. Hey, man.

What did Nic Scourton bring to the Texas A&M defense?
Nic brought another dog in the room. Teams had problems, because they had nobody that they could just really single out. Everybody, that dude is going to eat.
How was your Senior Bowl experience?
The Senior Bowl gave me the opportunity to show people my ability, because people just see me on tape and just be like, 'Oh, he's just big. He's not fast.' I just went in there, answered everybody's questions and showed people why I should be a first-round pick.
Are you going to remember the player’s names that are picked ahead of you?
Oh, yeah, of course. I'm going to give -- If you don't pick me. Just know I'm bringing hell to your city.
What separates you in such a deep defensive line class?
I just feel like my athletic ability, my willpower to always be great and just my sheer competitive nature. I'm a very competitive guy no matter who I go against. My ceiling, if I keep working, I could potentially be a Hall of Famer one day. I feel like nobody can stop me but me. It's all on me.
Any good Teddy Bridgewater stories from your Miami days?
There was one time, when I was younger, I was kinda obsessed with playing receiver. And my best friend at the time played quarterback, and Teddy Bridgewater and my best friend had the same trainer, so I got to catch a couple balls from Teddy Two Gloves. My hands hurt for a couple days, though. He's a big figure in our city. He came back to the city after he took a break from the NFL. Came back, brought a state championship to Northwest. I mean, that's a great guy. He's a great guy in the community.
