UNITED FOOTBALL LEAGUE PLAYOFF PREVIEW
The United Football League (UFL) playoffs begin this Sunday. The top-seeded Orlando Storm (8-2) are scheduled host the DC Defenders (5-5) at 3:00p ET on ABC. Orlando is led by head coach Anthony Becht who has maximized the talents of quarterback Jack Plummer. The UFL MVP candidate threw for 2,188 yards and 17 touchdowns during the regular season.
With a strong supporting cast that includes top targets Elijah Badger and Chris Rowland, the Storm are capable of posting points on the board. On defense, cornerback Mishael Powell has been a constant presence, racking up 37 tackles and six pass deflections, along with a pair of big interceptions. Meanwhile, the defending champion Defenders and head coach Shannon Harris limp into this matchup without starting quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, who suffered a season-ending knee injury.
In the absence of Ta’amu, the Defenders will turn to signal-caller Jason Bean in an attempt to pull of the upset. DC has a stout defense that features safety Sam Kidd, who recorded 50 tackles, with five pass breakups, a pair of interceptions and two sacks. While Orlando enters as a slight favorite (-3) over DC, expect a close contest.
The second playoff game showcases the Louisville Kings (6-4) at the St. Louis Battlehawks (6-4) at 6:00pm ET on FOX. Louisville had plenty of ups-and-downs this season but head coach Chris Redman has the team playing their best ball of the year, as everything seems to be clicking for quarterback Chandler Rivers.
For St. Louis, head coach Ricky Proehl has compiled a star-studded squad that had the most players selected to the All UFL Team (seven). Veteran spring signal-caller Luis Perez gets the starting nod for the Battlehawks, who enter this contest as a slim favorite (-1.5) over the Kings. This contest is capable of going either way.
Winners from the two playoff games on Sunday will advance to the United Cup, scheduled for June 13th.
