ALL ACCESS FOOTBALL REPORT: NFL DRFT TIER 2 QB WATCH
Welcome to the World Famous All Access Football Report, published every Wednesday. In this week’s edition, we turn our attention to some of the ‘second-tier’ of quarterback prospects for the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft (just 148 days away).
With much ado being made about the tier one signal-callers, what about some of the top prospects who could be chosen on Day 2? We examine three quarterbacks who may fall short of the first round but still possess characteristics that should appeal to NFL teams. It’s time to take out the multi-colored pen, as we make note of all the positives and negatives that front office personnel must weigh once April rolls around.
Also inside, our conversation with defensive lineman Ralph Holley, who discusses his journey from the USFL, to CFL and then NFL, truly great insight! Plus, the QB Huddle boys are back to preview the NFL Week 12 slate.
Coming later this week, it’s a double-dose of All Access Football Draft Insider, as we bring you all the names you need to know for the college football action with separate editions for both the Friday contests, plus the marquee matchup on Saturday between the Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan Wolverines. Be sure to tune-in for more NFL Draft chatter this Saturday at 10:00am eastern time, on the NFL Draft Watch Show.
In case you missed it, we published the AAF Scout Notebook earlier this week (posted every Monday), with the latest draft buzz, underclassmen who have declared, plus seven new in-depth scouting reports, including four players who have been invited to the 2026 East-West Shrine Bowl. For the most up-to-date NFL Draft news, featuring continuous updates leading up to the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, be sure to bookmark the AAF NFL Draft Headquarters Page.
OKLAHOMA QB JOHN MATEER: “NOT THINKING ABOUT NFL
There has been much speculation surrounding the draft status of Oklahoma signal-caller John Mateer (photo: Oklahoma Athletics), as the Sooners get set to host LSU in their regular season finale. The dual-threat phenomenon was pressed about his plans to declare for the 2026 NFL Draft earlier this week.
“Not really [thinking about the NFL]. We got the most important game of the year coming up because it’s the next one,” he said. “These guys deserve everything I have.”
Once considered to be in the mix for first round contention and a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, Mateer suffered a broken bone in his right throwing hand midway through the season, which required surgery and resulted in him missing several weeks. Since his return to the saddle, Mateer has thrown for just four touchdown passes and four interceptions in his past six games.
However, his recent struggles hasn’t deterred Mateer from keeping a positive outlook. “It’s a lot of me ... just taking short, easy stuff, keeping us in efficient situations and then hitting the shots,” he said in response to his recent stretch. “Those can be game-changers. We tried it a little more and just didn’t land them, which is fine. We’ll get better. Just gotta get more game reps at it.” From a leadership and accountability standpoint, Mateer checks off all the boxes.
At this stage of his development, Mateer would likely be better suited to return to Norman for another year and continue to refine his overall game. More of a point guard than pro-level quarterback, he often tends to improvise when his first read is taken away, a testament to his playmaking ability. Although, for the Texas native to sustain success at the next level, he will need to develop more of a pocket presence and learn to move onto the next progression.
Thus far on the season, Mateer is completing 62.3% of his passes, for 2,260 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The fiery commando has also added 389 rushing yards and seven scores via the ground in 10 games. Currently, he ranks as the No.9 rated draft-eligible quarterback, according to NFL Draft Bible.
PENN STATE QB DREW ALLAR ALL-IN ON NFL DRAFT PROCESS
Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, who underwent season-ending surgery on his broken left ankle six weeks ago, stated this week that he’s amid ‘full recovery,’ as he gets set to prepare for the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.
“I’m going to be a better version of myself out of this,” Allar told ESPN. “The doctors said it’s going to be stronger than before because of the type of surgery they did. It won’t prohibit me from anything in the future or need to get it redone. A lot of guys have done it and come back.
One of the most decorated quarterbacks in Nittany Lions history, Allar wraps up his collegiate career appearing in 45 games (35 starts), setting a new all-time school record with a 63.2% completion percentage (among full-time starters), finished fourth all-time with 7,402 passing yards and third all-time with 61 touchdown passes, while throwing just 13 interceptions in four seasons.
A big criticism of Allar coming into the year was his lack of deep ball opportunities. While he showed much more willingness to take chances downfield in 2025, Penn State struggled mightily, losing all three of his final starts, which ultimately led to the firing of head coach James Franklin (recently named new head coach at Virginia Tech).
Once heralded as a potential first round prospect, the lust surrounding Allar has since dimmed. However, with what could be a thin draft pool amongst the Class of 2026 signal-callers, Allar still has time to recoup some of the previous hype that surrounded his name. He is currently ranked as the No.19 draft-eligible quarterback, according to NFL Draft Bible. However, just four of the quarterbacks ranked ahead of him have exhausted their college eligibility, which could open up the door for Allar to slide up the pecking order.
“It’s going to be on me to make the most of whatever opportunity is put in front of me,” Allar declared. “I have no idea [where I’ll get picked], but whatever happens, happens.”
The Ohio native plans to throw in front of NFL scouts at the NFL Scouting combine in late February, or at Penn State pro day in March. When you factor in the pedigree, experience, size and big arm of Allar, then weigh his recent struggles and injury, it makes for one of the more polarizing player evaluations in this year’s draft.
TAYLEN GREEN ROLLER-COASTER RIDE LEADS TO QB CONTROVERSY
Arkansas volatile quarterback Taylen Green has been one of the most frustrating players to watch. That is due to the alluring skill-set he possesses, combined with some of the bone-headed decisions that tend to rear it’s ugly head. Quite simply, the Green experience has been roller-coaster ride.
It has resulted in a mystery surrounding the Razorbacks starter as they enter Senior Day weekend versus Missouri. Last weekend against Texas, Green committed one of the ugliest interceptions you will ever see. With a 14-0 lead against LSU two weeks ago, he threw two poor balls into coverage, once again vanishing a lead due to costly picks. In 25 career games, Green has 24 turnovers, including 10 interceptions in 2025.
Hence, when Green briefly left the Longhorns matchup to be evaluated for an injury against the Longhorns, Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino remained with backup KJ Jefferson, despite Green being cleared to re-enter the contest. “There was a period of time where they said, ‘Taylen’s back up,’ “ Petrino said after the game. “And I said, ‘No, we’re going to finish this one with KJ and keep him playing.’ “
Now, it would appear that we might not know who starts until kickoff, as Petrino remained coy about the situation when asked if he has made a decision on who would get the call this week. “Not yet. We’ve got to play it out in practice and make sure everybody’s in good shape,” Petrino replied. “We probably won’t even announce it, you know. We’ll just work it and see who’s ready to go.”
The gangly, dual-threat, long-striding Green has been praised for his leadership role since arriving from Boise State and dazzles with his size, big arm and innate athleticism. But for all the highlight reel plays he makes, they tend to be erased by frequent mistakes. Such as his game against Auburn earlier this year, when Green threw three consecutive interceptions on three straight drives, just one of many snapshots that spell out his inconsistency.
In terms of his NFL Draft stock, it only takes one team to fall in love with the tantalizing tools of Green, who currently ranks as the No.13 draft-eligible quarterback, according to NFL Draft Bible. Back in the 2019 NFL Draft, Tyree Jackson was an undrafted free agent out of Buffalo who possesses eerily similar traits to Green. The length, ability to extend plays, throw on the run is almost like watching a reflection in the mirror. Simply stated, the development of Green is a long-term project, a key factor that NFL decision-makers will be forced to weigh come draft day.
