VANDERBILT: STOWERS DRAWING FIRST ROUND BUZZ
After soaking in the Nashville festivities for two days, we had to check in with the Vanderbilt Commodores, where head coach Clark Lea has generated momentum in landing some future NFL pros. Many observers were a bit surprised when Eli Stowers reversed course and decided to bypass the NFL Draft, to instead return to Vanderbilt for one more season. The quarterback-turned-tight end had flourished during the Commodores winningest season since 2013 (James Franklin’s final year before bolting for Penn State). More remarkable, is the fact that Vanderbilt hasn’t had a first round selection since the Chicago Bears selected offensive tackle Chris Williams with the 11th overall pick. For Stowers, the NIL factor played a significant role in his decision. However, his increased campus persona and attention has not gone to his head. On this hot, humid day in Nashville, Stowers was seen welcoming strangers to practice, while coach after coach sang praise about his character and high football IQ. Combined with his pass-catching prowess and elite athleticism (40” vertical jump, 11-foot broad), Stowers is trending towards a Day 1 grade.

BROWNS: SHEDEUR SANDERS SPECIAL DELIVERY
Last week in Nashville, we got a first-hand look at number one overall pick Cameron Ward at Tennessee Titans training camp. While Ward was chosen first overall, his rookie counterpart Shedeur Sanders had to wait until the Cleveland Browns selected in the fifth round at pick No.144. At this juncture a year ago and for most of the season, Ward and Sanders were often connected at the hip when it came to who the top signal-caller of the 2025 NFL Draft would be. Since then, their paths have been distinctly different journeys, which has been captivating to watch. After the 411-mile trek from Nashville-to Charlotte, there was plenty of buzz surrounding Bank of America Stadium upon our arrival, as preseason tickets fetched prices above $300.
Sanders would not disappoint those in attendance. In a scene straight out of WWE, the polarizing rookie quarterback arrived to the stadium with an entourage that included a grim reaper. It foreshadowed his tantalizing performance on the field, as Sanders received the start and played towards the end of the third quarter, carving up the Carolina Panthers like a Thanksgiving turkey feast. The poise, playaction, decisive decision-making, natural feel and touch were all on full display. His performance has since ignited much debate about the Browns starting quarterback position. The room includes former first round picks Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett (former first round pick DeShaun Watson is still listed as a member of the organization), in addition to fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, chosen two rounds prior to Sanders. While Pickett and Gabriel nurse injuries and Flacco preserves his 40-year old body, the spotlight is shining solely on Sanders at the moment, just the way he likes it. Long known for their unorthodox front office management, Cleveland has a curious decision to make.

UNC: FUTURE OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL HAS ARRIVED
It was a quick turnaround from Charlotte-to-Chapel Hill, as we beat the sunrise on our 140-mile trip north for an up close look at the operation that is the North Carolina Tar Heels. It was a real eye opener to see the evolution of what has become college football. One thing is clear, the future is here and now! Legendary head coach Bill Belichick has been hard at work, orchestrating a front office personnel staff that is unparalleled. Tar Heels general manager Michael Lombardi brings over two decades of NFL experience, as a three-time Super Bowl champion. On the coaching staff, Belichick has surrounded himself with a plethora of former head coaches. The list includes former Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens, former UConn head coach Bob Diaco, along with former CFL general manager/head coach and four-time Grey Cup champion Chris Jones. Of course, Belichick is a man who needs no introduction, complete with a Hall of Fame resume. Top order of business? Flip the roster, entirely. The 2025 North Carolina football squad features over 100 new players who were not on the team a year ago, including 40 transfer players and 30 incoming high school recruits! The script has yet to be written. No one knows for certain how this story will end, or if it is even possible to mesh so many new parts into cohesion but you will be hard-pressed to find a more qualified staff who will attempt to pull off the ultimate feat.
