INSIDE THE NUMBERS: OG FIRST ROUND PICKS
Possibly the most under appreciated position in all of football is the offensive guard. Responsible for keeping the quarterback clean and expected to be a mauling machine in the run game, the guard is usually doing a great job when you don’t hear his name called. While the majority of quality teams share a common theme in having strong offensive lines, not all organizations believe in drafting a guard high.
Since 2000, there has been a total of 31 offense guards selected in the first round of the past 25 NFL Drafts; a little more than one per year on average. It’s common to see drafts where guards are not taken at all in the first round and rarely will you see more than three selected on Day 1. Remarkably, the last time the NFL Draft saw four guards chosen in round one was in 1982, led by Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Mike Munchak.
Those franchises who have been willing to draft guards high, are well-rewarded. A majority of premier guards around the league are found early in the draft. In fact, three of the four guards named to the 2023 NFL All-Pro Team (Joe Thuney of the Chiefs, Zack Martin of the Cowboys, Tyler Smith of the Cowboys and Chris Lindstrom of the Falcons), were first round picks with the exception of Thuney who was a third round draft choice.
2025 NFL DRAFT PRESEASON BIG BOARD: OG
While they are far and few in between, elite guards will find their way into the first round. That doesn’t mean the NFL doesn’t value them but they must be supreme prospects. For example, we saw three players who were considered guards be selected in round one of the 2022 NFL Draft (Kenyon Green, Zion Johnson and Cole Strange).
The scouting community should be excited because the 2025 crop of guards could be an even stronger group than the trio we saw selected two years ago!
A two-time National Champion and All-American selection, Georgia tree-trunk guard Tate Ratledge is a long, strong, mobile defender of the quarterback. In fact, he has allowed just one sack in his last 1,600 reps. His father, Dean, enjoyed a brief NFL stint. The influx of pro prospects that Kirby Smart has developed along the offensive line is remarkable. After having just one offensive lineman drafted between 2013-17, the Bulldogs have had 11 since 2018.
However, the best guard in the SEC last season would have appeared to be Tyler Booker of Alabama who is as feisty as a hippo and as wide as one too. He returns to assume a major leadership role with the Crimson Tide after a dominating season in which he registered 41 knockdown blocks (3.4 per game was most on the team).
With 44 starts under his belt at left tackle, Oregon State technician Joshua Gray will be making the switch to guard based on NFL feedback. The move seems to make sense, as Gray suffered a foot injury, which caused him to miss the final two games last season. His sixth season of eligibility will be put to good use with a full season to adjust at his new position.
Don’t be fooled by the helmet sticker when it comes to Clay Webb of Jacksonville State. One of the top recruits in the nation coming out of high school, Webb began his career at Georgia before landing at Jacksonville State under Rich Rodriguez, earning All-Conference USA honors.
