INSIDE THE NUMBERS: OT FIRST ROUND PICKS
After quarterback, the offensive tackle position is the most important on offense. Some would argue it’s the second most necessary building block when assembling a roster. The role of a blindside protector is to protect your most valuable commodity, the quarterback.
Hence, more than ever before, offensive tackle has been a position of rather high commodity. Over the past five NFL Drafts (2020 - 2024), an average of five offensive tackles have been chosen in round one. That number has increased compared to the previous decade (2010 - 2019), which averaged three and a half offensive tackles selected in the first round.
History has shown us that elite offensive tackles are taken early and often in the draft. In fact, all four of the NFL All Pro selections in 2023 were chosen inside the top ten of the first round. They include Trent Williams of the 49ers (No.4 overall in 2010), Tyron Smith of the Jets (No.9 overall in 2011), Penei Sewell of the Lions (No.7 overall in 2021) and Lane Johnson of the Eagles (No.4 overall in 2013).
2025 NFL DRAFT PRESEASON BIG BOARD: OT
It was a bountiful NFL Draft for offensive tackles in 2024, as we saw a run in round one with seven of the first 32 selections. A large percentage of the first two days of the draft (14%) were spent on offensive tackle, as they typically come off the board in a fast and furious manner.
Upon first glance, this year’s class is not expected to be nearly as deep.
The most polished offensive line prospect would be Will Campbell of LSU, who boasts excellent size, strength and technique. He has started 26 games at left tackle since stepping foot on Baton Rouge campus. Campbell demonstrates elite mirroring-technique, along with sound footwork and didn’t allow a sack last season. Those teams in need of a tackle will be sure to spend extra time on campus, as the Tigers boast a pair of future NFL bookends.
Starting LSU right tackle Emery Jones also owns prototype size and length, plus incredible power. He entered the starting lineup at the same time as Campbell and also has 26 starts to his resume. In fact, the two are roommates and share a brotherly bond. Last season, Jones' two roughest outings came against Georgia and Alabama, so there is still a bit of something left to prove.
Serving up more pancakes than IHOP, the athletic and aggressive Anthony Belton of North Carolina State. An enforcer, Belton possesses some real girth to his lower body and is super stout at the point of attack, making it extremely difficult to move him off his mark. He stacked 51 pancake blocks a year ago.
One of the biggest under the radar portal signings was Ivy League standout Jalen Travis who has the frame, length, athleticism and smarts to be a stellar pro. Be sure to file that name for the memory bank!
