COLLEGE BOWL GAME RISERS
The following players produced valiant individual efforts during the college bowl games played on Thursday. Despite each player being on the losing end of the final outcome, their decision to participate resulted in boosting their draft stock in front of NFL decision-makers, proving that it can indeed pay to play in bowl games.
RB Desmond Reid, Pittsburgh, Jr, 5075, 175, 4.49: Entering the GameAbove Sports Bowl, there were questions surrounding the status of a banged up Desmond Reid. Not only did the pint-sized stick of dynamite suit up, he ran loose to the tune of 165 rushing yards on 32 carries! Reid showcased his toughness battling through injury and fighting hamstring cramps in the fourth quarter. He would provide an additional five catches, something he has done well all season. While Reid stated he would return to Pitt prior to the game, his NFL Draft stock is now at an all-time high.
TE Harold Fannin, Bowling Green, Jr, 6030, 231, 4.70: There is something to be said about a record-setting performance during your bowl game that leaves a strong last impression amongst NFL scouts. That’s exactly what Fannin did during the Falcons shootout in the 68 Ventures Bowl. Fannin nabbed 17 balls, for a career-high 213 yards and one score. He would shatter the FBS single-season record for receiving yardage by a tight end along the way with 1,555 (the previous record was 1,352 by Jace Amaro of Texas Tech). Fannin just may have played his way into the first round.
LB Tyreem Powell, Rutgers, Sr, 6050, 240, 4.62: A big, bruising thumper, you won’t find too many NFL linebackers with the size/speed dimensions that Powell possesses. A lateral, sideline-to-sideline, hair on fire type, his ability to close the gap was on full display during the Rate Bowl, recording a game-high eight tackles. A former high school quarterback who teamed with Isaih Pacheco (Chiefs) in New Jersey, Powell displays a high football IQ and wore the green dot for the Scarlet Knights on defense. Next stop, Mobile, where he’ll participate in the Senior Bowl.
