ON LOCATION: MONMOUTH (LONG BRANCH, NJ)

Our shortest road trip of the year brings us from one Jersey Shore (our home base of Lavallette, NJ), to another Jersey Shore town in Long Branch, New Jersey for our annual up close look at the Monmouth Hawks. However, don’t be fooled by the surrounding beach atmosphere, as this is a gritty, hard-nosed and well-coached squad under Kevin Callahan who enters his 34th season at the helm. Some notable Monmouth alumni includes former NFL Pro Bowl wideout Miles Austin (2006 NFL Draft) and two-time Super Bowl champion receiver Chris Hogan (2011 NFL Draft). In addition to former NFL draft selections such as tight end John Nalbone (Rd5 in 2009 NFL Draft) and wideout/tight end Neal Sterling (Rd7 in 2015 NFL Draft). Currently, running back Owen Wright (2023 NFL Draft) is in his third NFL season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Another talented runner in Jaden Shirden (2024 NFL Draft) had a brief stint with the Carolina Panthers before finishing up with the San Antonio Brahmas of the UFL this past spring. Former Monmouth quarterback Kenji Bahar (2020 NFL Draft) recently finished his season with the Massachusetts Pirates of the IFL.

There could be more Hawks entering the league in 2026. Led by ‘Jersey Shore Gunslinger,’ Derek Robertson. Fresh off a record-setting 2025 campaign, Robertson looked the part during our attendance at training camp, checking off all the boxes. Meanwhile, offensive tackle JT Cornelius has also drawn NFL buzz due to a sturdy frame, solid technique and extensive experience. Known as the ‘Mayor of Monmouth;’ on campus, Cornelius is one player who pro evaluators will be monitoring this fall.
