It has been more than 20 years since USC last won a national championship (2005). Last season, the Trojans finished ranked (16th) for the first time since 2022 (the first year under head coach Lincoln Riley), in a draft class which produced Caleb Williams (Bears), the No.1 overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.
In fact, Riley has mentored three first round signal-callers during his career, including Kyler Murray (Vikings) in 2019 and Baker Mayfield (Buccaneers) in 2018, plus Jalen Hurts (Eagles), who was a second round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. His latest protege features USC quarterback Jayden Maiava, whom some observers believe could achieve first round status with another strong campaign for the Trojans.
The Trojans’ success won’t be left entirely up to Maiava, however. Returning running back Waymond Jordan (pic: USC Athletic) looks to bounce back from an injury-riddled 2025 campaign. A shifty runner with sharp vision and evasive cutback ability, Jordan is also a capable receiver out of the backfield and could garner late round interest come April.
One new player to the program worth monitoring is cornerback Jontez Williams. Once considered a heralded prospect, Williams suffered a torn ACL early last season at Iowa State. With a clean bill of health, along with a fresh start, Williams could prove to be a key cog for the USC defense, as there’s a strong chance we could see him rejuvenate his draft stock.
