The much anticipated college coaching debut of North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick resulted in a disappointing 4-8 campaign. Along with general manager Michael Lombardi, the self proclaimed ‘33rd NFL Team’ whiffed badly on the transfer portal. The highest paid GM in the NCAA, Lombardi has since been placed on paid administrative leave after a human resources complaint.

To add to the turmoil, defensive coordinator Steve Belichick took an indefinite medical leave from the program upon the start of training camp. His return is unknown, as the school prepares for their Week 0 matchup against TCU in Dublin, Ireland. The Tar Heels remain talent-deficient after being shut out of the 2026 NFL Draft. It was the first time that North Carolina did not have a player drafted in a decade (2016).

Bust out pass-rusher Melkart Abou Jaoude (photo: UNC Athletics) hopes to reverse that trend. After walking onto the Delaware football team while working in a New Jersey bagel store, Abou Jaoude found his way to Chapel Hill, where he exploded for 10.5 sacks in 2025. The Lebanon native has bulked up 50 pounds since his Blue Hen days and suddenly finds himself squarely on the NFL radar. He tops our list of Tar Heels prospects entering the 2026 season.
